Focusing on Solutions: The Key to Extraordinary Leadership

It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing on the negative. Whether it’s in your personal life or within your business, it’s simple to point out what’s wrong and highlight what’s not working. But the real strength, both in leadership and in life, is found in how quickly you can come up with a solution and find the positive.

Too often, I see individuals and teams get bogged down in the problems. It’s easy to join the chorus of complaints, to point fingers, and to dwell on the setbacks. But the true mark of a strong leader or team member is the ability to say, “Okay, I see the issue, but what are we going to do about it?”

The Importance of Solutions

In my years of leadership, I’ve learned that it’s the solution-focused mindset that makes all the difference. It’s not enough to point out what’s wrong; it’s far more valuable to offer a proposed solution and work towards it. When teams come together and focus on solving a problem, they not only tackle the immediate issue, but they also build character and resilience along the way.

I used to tell my employees, “You’re not allowed to bring me complaints without a proposed solution.” This wasn’t just a rule, it was a challenge to empower them to think critically, take ownership, and become part of the solution instead of just identifying the problem.

When you’re focusing on solutions, you start shifting the culture of your team or business toward positivity and forward momentum. You begin to foster an environment where everyone is working towards progress, not just discussing setbacks.

Extraordinary Leadership: From Complaints to Solutions

If you want to be extraordinary as a leader, it’s not enough to be the loudest voice in the room or the most opinionated. It’s about the willingness to point out solutions and work to bring about success. It’s about contributing to the conversation in a way that moves the needle forward, rather than dwelling on what’s wrong.

Leadership isn’t just about having all the answers. In fact, one of the most powerful leadership qualities is knowing when to step back, let others speak, and create a space where everyone feels heard. It’s about listening first and then working collaboratively to find solutions. When you lead by example, others will follow suit and focus on solutions instead of complaints.

Why Focusing on Solutions Matters

In both personal and professional contexts, focusing on solutions brings people together. It turns conversations from problems into opportunities, and it helps people take ownership of their roles in overcoming challenges. By making a habit of proposing solutions instead of adding to the list of things that aren’t working, you create an atmosphere of trust and productivity. It’s contagious; one person’s solution-focused attitude can spark others to do the same.

In business, this is especially important. Teams that focus on solving problems quickly and efficiently become more adaptable and innovative. In a rapidly changing world, businesses can’t afford to get stuck in a cycle of complaints and negativity. They need to be agile, with every team member contributing to solutions.

Don’t Just Talk, Take Action

The next time you find yourself in a meeting or discussion, ask yourself: Are you focusing on the problem, or are you already thinking about the solution? Are you waiting for someone else to act, or are you stepping up to take ownership and contribute to the resolution?

It’s easy to be critical. It’s easy to point out flaws and shortcomings. But that’s not what sets extraordinary leaders apart. What makes leaders extraordinary is their ability to identify the issues, step up with a solution, and bring others along for the journey of positive change.

So next time the conversation shifts toward what’s not working, stop and ask, “What can we do about it?” Whether in your personal life, within your team, or in your business, the answer lies in being part of the solution, not just a passive observer of the problem.
